GLE is a mid-size luxury SUV by the famous German carmaker. Next season, Mercedes-Benz will update its big rigs with numerous options. The large GLS is entering the new generation, and some of the features and solutions will be carried over to the smaller sibling. Whatsoever, the mid-size model is getting some unique upgrades, while the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 will follow the release of the standard model.
As always, the AMG badge marks the performance-oriented vehicle with special drivetrain upgrades. Engineers are having numerous tasks to make this mode compatible with BMW X5 M as the main rival. The Bavarian carmaker is threating more serious than ever, and that is one of the main reasons why Mercedes pushed for the new GLE. What is more important, the battle could also continue in the electric segment, since the mid-size vehicles are also getting hybrid and PHEV units in the near future. Until these become production models, we will focus on AMG GLE vs X5M fight.
New Generation of GLE SUV
The new Mercedes GLE launched the fourth generation models this year. Of course, a lot of updates came with the new SUV and we won’t mention all of them. Looking from the outside, only true fans will notice changes to the new model. However, there are some significant changes that affect the future of GLE. First of all, the wheelbase is longer than before. That creates more space inside. Also, Mercedes is adding extra headroom with the new series. Definitely, the headlight of the interior is a dual 12-inch screen for the control panel and infotainment system. The MBUX is the topic of the latest conversation, that caused many other premium carmakers to develop new systems and features. Well, the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 will borrow this from its base sibling, but everything else is under the reconstruction.
2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Spy Photos
The new AMG model is not following the standard SUV so close. Although we were sure Mercedes is going to deliver this version of the GLE mid-size model in 2020, it is not going to happen. The AMG package will be ready for 2021 season. Spy photos of the vehicle are available a year before it can debut. This SUV will carry over some of the solutions the new GLE is offering. Additionally, it will be definitely a two-row SUV, since the prototype is showing the sloping roof. So, the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 will compete with BMW X6M as well.
What we can see on test mules? Of course, panels are hiding most of the vehicle. On the other hand, there are some features that unveil important details. For example, round exhaust tip is different from the base model and previous edition of AMG SUV for the GLE. A single-bar grille is an interesting change. We believe that GLE AMG53 model is getting Panamericana grille, but spy photos are making us less confident into this outcome. Still, with more than a year until the release, there is enough time for the complete change.
AMG Package Brings Hybrid Drivetrain
Under the hood of the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 will sit a hybrid setup. The German company is combining the V6 engine with an electric battery. We can find a similar setup on the CLS 53 AMG sedan. With an output of 430 hp, we would think the V8 is in the engine room. Turbo-six unit is also capable to produce 385 lb-ft of torque, mated to the new sport nine-speed automatic transmission. It sends power to rear wheels and all-wheel drive remains optional. The new coupe SUV will be able to sprint to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds.
2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 vs GLE 63
The GLE mid-size SUV is also offering a more powerful unit. It is a 4.0-liter V8. You are getting more of everything with this package. It also gets help by an electric motor to burst 550 hp. For the GLS full-size model, the output goes up to 600 hp. However, the GLE 53 is a much cheaper option, since the V8 will make it cost above $110,000.
