The compact Kia Sportage crossover SUV returns on the duty in the refreshed form for the 2020 model year. The model attracts buyers with a spacious and quiet cabin and plenty of available features at a competitive price. The sports bits add also to its value and an optional turbocharged engine should be a strong point when making a decision what model to buy.
However, with a bunch of the upgrades, the 2020 Kia Sportage could just become more appealing. The model arrives with revised exterior styling and brings new wheel options. The model has just got the upgraded, standard infotainment systems and an array of the new active safety systems appear in the new version as well. Kia also added a new S trim which takes the position above the base LX version.
2020 Kia Sportage: Design
The new 2020 Kia Sportage adds a few new styling touches on
the fourth-generation design of the model. With the measured enhancements, the
model looks sharper than before.
The front section gets a new detail in the form of the chrome strip stretching below the tiger nose grille. A sporty designed front bumper added also a silver-painted, skid-plate like element for off-road appearance.
The refreshed model also offers optional LED headlights
joined with the fog lights and LED running lights. The taillights get also new
LED-based design and new rear bumper with uncovered tailpipes is also available
in some trims.
For the new model year, the Kia Sportage also offers various
wheel sizes and styles starting with the 17-inch units on the base version and
growing to 18- and 19-inch options in upper grades.
The cabin of the updated Kia Sportage continues mostly
unchanged but there are more base equipment and a new S trim option between the
base LX and mid-range EX.
The changes in the cabin include a new steering wheel and
Kia provides upgraded, 8-inch touchscreen-based infotainment system with Apple
Car Play and Android Auto from the base version. The center display sits
between revised air vents.
Kia also bolstered the safety of the refreshed 2020 Sportage
with new active safety systems. The model will offer active lane control,
adaptive cruise control with stop and go, auto high beam headlights and
automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection.
The brand hasn’t yet detailed what equipment will be available in what trims but the crash-preventing technologies should start in lower grades. The model will also offer dual-zone climate control, heated seats, leather upholstery, navigation, Harman Kardon sound system, blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, etc.
2020 Kia Sportage: Powertrains
The 2020 Kia Sportage returns on the market with the same
engine options and available front- and all-wheel drive.
The Sportage LX, new S and EX rely on the 2.4-liter inline-4
engine with the power and torque output of 181 hp and 175 pound-feet
respectively. The engine can be combined with both front- and all-wheel drive
and standard 6-speed automatic transmission.
The Sportage will also provide more potent performance when
fitted with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This engine is again
available in the mix with the 6-speed automatic gearbox and both two- and
four-wheel drive. The turbocharged unit makes 240 hp and torque of 260 lb-ft.
The Sportage can tow up to 2,000 pounds.
The compact Sportage with the front-wheel drive and the base
engine under the hood should return 23 mpg city, 30 highway and combined fuel
economy of 26 mpg. When the base unit sends power to all wheels the fuel
efficiency will drop slightly. The 2.4L inline-4 4WD will achieve 22/29 mpg
city/highway or 25 mpg combined.
With turbocharged unit and front-wheel drive, the Sportage
will score 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway with the combined figure at 23 mpg.
When the all-wheel drive is employed with the turbo-4 engine, the fuel
efficiency should match 19 mpg city and 24 mpg highway.
These ratings compared to well-established rivals don’t fare
well. The front-wheel-powered Honda CR-V earns up to 30 mpg combined. The
front-wheel configured Mazda CX-5 returns 28 mpg combined. The all-wheel-drive
Subaru Forester matches 29 mpg combined.
2020 Kia Sportage: Arrival, Price
The refreshed 2020 Kia Sportage will go on the market in the
second quarter of the year. Kia is yet to reveal the equipment organization and
price. With the enhanced base equipment, the starting price should move
slightly upper from the current base $24, 795.
